Vodni stolp - Water Tower
Maribor, Slovenia, Slovenia
Vodni stolp, or the Water Tower, in Maribor, Slovenia, is a late Renaissance pentagonal fortified tower built around 1555 by Italian and local master builders as part of the city's defensive walls along the Drava River.
Replacing an earlier round Smodniški Tower from 1529, it protected the southeastern flank with massive stone walls, embrasures for artillery, a high hip roof, and connections to the nearby Židovski stolp, funded by Styrian provinces due to Maribor's strategic role against Turkish threats.
Damaged in World War II bombings and restored between 1967-1968, it later served as a water supply point until 1847, a wine cellar—now Slovenia's oldest—and today stands as a cultural monument offering panoramic river views amid the Lent district.
