Štanjel Castle
Štanjel, Slovenia, Slovenia
Štanjel Castle is a medieval fortress crowning the hilltop village of Štanjel on Slovenia's Karst Plateau, overlooking the Vipava Valley, with origins in a 16th-century structure built by the Counts of Coblenz atop earlier fortifications dating to prehistoric and Roman times. Fortified in the 17th century against Ottoman raids and passing through noble owners like the Coroninis, Zahonys, and Marzetinis, it was extensively renovated between 1920 and 1935 by architect Maks Fabiani into a multipurpose public building housing municipal offices. Severely damaged by fire in 1944 during WWII, the partially restored castle now features an art gallery with Lojze Spacal's works, event spaces, and panoramic views, blending Gothic-Renaissance elements within Štanjel's walled medieval core.
