Rihemberk Castle (Grad Rihemberk), perched on a steep hill above Branik village near Nova Gorica in southwestern Slovenia, is a striking 13th-century medieval fortress renowned as one of the Slovene Littoral's most picturesque landmarks. First documented in 1230 and built atop prehistoric and possible Roman fortifications by the Rihemberk knights—a branch of the Andechs family—its dominant Gothic bergfried tower anchors double curtain walls, round Renaissance towers added by the Lanthieri family after 1528, and a 1649 palatial residential wing amid strategic Karst plateau routes. Owned by Patriarchs of Aquileia, Counts of Gorizia, Habsburgs, and Lanthieris until WWII destruction by partisans in 1944—losing all furnishings—it endured nationalization, gradual decay, and partial 1980s-2017 restorations, now serving as an interpretation center for 800 years of history and local nature.
