Škrljevo Castle
Škrljevo, Šentrupert, Slovenia, Slovenia
Škrljevo Castle (Grad Škrljevo) is a Romanesque-origin fortified mansion in the village of Škrljevo, Šentrupert municipality, southeast Slovenia, first mentioned in 1043 as Chrilouva in connection with St. Hemma of Gurk's donation to the Gurk diocese. Evolving from a medieval tower court owned by Krka bishops into a Renaissance stronghold and later Baroque residence through noble families like Auerspergs, Wernegks, Khaysells, and Langenmantels until the Podobniks in 1885, it features thick 1.5-meter walls, a rectangular ground plan, and Gothic-Renaissance elements amid overgrown park remnants. Nationalized post-WWII after Salesian use until 1950, the neglected structure—once hosting a chapel—stands empty as a protected monument, its layered history awaiting revitalization.
