AKC Metelkova Mesto in Ljubljana, Slovenia, is an autonomous cultural and social center that originated in 1993 when a group of around 200 alternative artists, activists, and volunteers occupied former military barracks to prevent their demolition.

The site was originally built as Austro-Hungarian army barracks in the late 19th century and later served as the Slovenian headquarters for the Yugoslav People's Army until Slovenia's independence in 1991. After the army left, the area was left abandoned and faced potential commercial redevelopment, but the squatters turned it into a vibrant hub for alternative culture, music, art, and political activism.

Metelkova hosts numerous clubs, galleries, and studios, regularly offering concerts, exhibitions, and community events, making it one of Ljubljana’s most important centers for contemporary and countercultural expression. The space remains in constant transformation and is recognized as part of Slovenia’s cultural heritage, embodying a strong spirit of creativity and resistance.
