Amadé Várrom

Amadé Várrom is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle located near the village of Fony in the Zemplén Mountains of northeastern Hungary.

The castle was built in the late 13th century on a steep rocky ridge, a position that provided excellent natural defenses and wide views over the surrounding landscape. The fortress is associated with Amade Aba (Amadé), one of the most powerful Hungarian nobles of his time, who used it as part of his regional power base.

During the turbulent period following the end of the Árpád dynasty, the castle played a role in political and military struggles in northern Hungary. By the 15th century, the castle had begun to decline and was gradually abandoned. Today, only fragments of the old tower and earthworks remain, but these ruins still reflect the site’s medieval past.
