Castle Well is a historic well located within the Castle District of Veszprém, one of Hungary’s oldest cities. Situated near Holy Trinity Square on Castle Hill, the well is believed to date back to the early history of the castle and was first documented in records from 1569. Also known as the “Dragon Well,” it served as an important water source for the castle community for centuries. The well is over 40 metres deep and was carefully excavated and restored in the early 2000s, when numerous historical artifacts, including coins, pottery fragments, and a long hand-forged chain, were discovered. Today, Castle Well is a notable landmark in Veszprém’s historic castle area, admired for its cultural significance and connection to the city’s medieval past. Visitors can see the restored well while exploring the picturesque Castle District, which offers impressive architecture, historic monuments, and panoramic views over the city.
