Vitány Castle
Vértessomló, Hungary, Hungary
Vitány Castle (Vitányvár) is a medieval castle ruin located near the village of Vértessomló in Hungary’s Vértes Hills. Built in the second half of the 13th century, it stood on a forested hilltop in a strategically important position overlooking the surrounding area. The castle was first mentioned in historical records in 1324 and served as a royal fortress before passing into the hands of various noble families. During the Ottoman era, it was attacked and occupied several times. Its military role ended in the late 16th century when Christian forces destroyed it to prevent its reuse by the Turks. Today, visitors can explore the atmospheric ruins, which still include substantial stone walls, towers, and traces of medieval architectural features. Hidden among the trees, the site is popular with hikers and history enthusiasts, offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside and a glimpse into Hungary’s medieval past.
