Baumkircher Tower
Vipava, Slovenia, Slovenia
Baumkircher Tower, also known as Tabor Castle or Lower Castle, stands in Vipava, southwestern Slovenia, guarding a stone bridge over the Vipava River. Built in 1342 by Herhlin Kranspergar as a defensive fortification, it passed to the Counts of Celje, Patriarchate of Aquileia, Habsburgs, and notably the Baumkircher knights who named it until 1471, when owner Andreas Baumkircher was executed for rebelling against Emperor Frederick III. Later held by leaseholders like Jurij Gallo and from around 1624 by the Lanthieri family until World War I, its remnants today include the main tower, partial walls, a gateway with 1653 Lanthieri arms relief, and a small building.
