Betnava castle
Maribor, Slovenia, Slovenia
Betnava Castle (also Betnava Manor) in Maribor, Slovenia, was first documented in 1319 as Wintenaw, a fortified estate owned by the knightly Winden family, later evolving into a Renaissance moated manor under nobles like Auersperg, Szekely, Herberstein, Khissl, and Brandis. Destroyed by fire in 1685, it was rebuilt in late-Baroque style around 1780 by architects Johann Nepomuk Fuchs and Joseph Hueber, featuring a chapel of the Holy Cross, trompe l'oeil frescoes, and a grand staircase, serving as bishops' summer residence from 1863. Owned by the Maribor Archdiocese since 2000 after wartime seizures and nationalization, it faces a preserved moat-garden island and English park, though ongoing restoration addresses maintenance issues.
