Bocskai Várkastély in Nagykereki is one of eastern Hungary’s most important historic landmarks.

The castle originated in the late medieval period and was later transformed into a Renaissance-style fortified residence by István Bocskai, the Hungarian nobleman and Prince of Transylvania after whom it is named. The site played a significant role during Bocskai’s uprising against Habsburg rule in the early 1600s.

Over the centuries, the building was rebuilt and expanded, gaining Baroque, Classical, and Romantic architectural features. Although parts of the original fortifications have disappeared, the castle still retains elements of its historic character, including a surviving tower and landscaped grounds.

Today, the castle operates as a museum and cultural attraction, with exhibitions that explore the history of the fortress, the life of István Bocskai, and the achievements of the Hajdú soldiers who supported him. Visitors can also enjoy the surrounding garden and learn about an important chapter of Hungarian history.
