Borl Castle, perched on a limestone cliff above the Drava River near Dolane in northeastern Slovenia, dates back to the 12th century as a Hungarian border fortress amid regional conflicts. It changed hands between Hungarian, Styrian, and noble families like the lords of Ptuj and Székely, featuring a mighty tower, courtyards, defensive moat, and later Renaissance and Baroque additions including a 17th-century chapel. The site endured fires, sieges, and World War II use as a Gestapo prison, preserving wall paintings, sculptures, rock cellars, and a memorial room today, with stunning views toward Ptuj.
