Brežice Castle in Brežice, Slovenia, originated in the 12th century as a Salzburgers' fortress for defense and administration along the Sava River, but was largely rebuilt after destruction in 1515 during Slovenia's major peasants' revolt. Italian architects like Julio Dispatio and the del'Allio brothers constructed its Renaissance core between 1530 and 1590 under noble families such as the Gallensteins, creating a trapezoidal layout with four thick corner towers, double walls, arcaded courtyards, and a bowed gateway. Later owners including the Frankopans and Attems added Baroque features around 1720, such as a grand staircase, chapel with frescoes by Franc Ignac Flurer, and the Knights' Hall adorned with Metamorphoses scenes by Frančišek Karl Rembši, making it Slovenia's largest painted secular Baroque room today.
