Castle Hill (Várhegy) is the historic heart of Budapest on the Buda side of the Danube River.

Rising above the city, it has been a center of political, cultural, and royal life for centuries, with evidence of settlement dating back to medieval times and earlier periods. The hill is home to some of Hungary’s most famous landmarks, including Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and Fisherman’s Bastion.

Over the centuries, it served as a royal residence, a military fortress, and an administrative center, surviving wars, Ottoman occupation, and major reconstruction after World War II. Today, Castle Hill is one of Budapest’s top attractions and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Buda Castle Quarter and the banks of the Danube.
