Castle of Dédes
Dédestapolcsány, Hungary, Hungary
The Castle of Dédes is a medieval hilltop fortress near Dédestapolcsány in northern Hungary, built in the mid-13th century during the reign of King Béla IV following the Mongol invasions.
Positioned on a limestone hill, it served as an important defensive and administrative center overseeing the surrounding region. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by several influential Hungarian noble families and played a key role in regional power struggles. Its most famous episode occurred in 1567 during an Ottoman siege, when the defenders held out for two weeks before escaping through a secret passage and detonating the castle’s gunpowder stores, causing heavy losses among the attackers.
After the siege, the Ottomans destroyed much of the fortress, and it was never rebuilt. The castle gradually fell into ruin, leaving only remnants of its walls and towers. Today, the ruins are a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Set amid the scenic Bükk Mountains, the site offers impressive views and a glimpse into Hungary’s medieval past.
