The Castle of Eger is one of Hungary’s most famous historic fortresses, located on a hill overlooking the city of Eger. 

Originally rebuilt in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion, it developed into an important military and religious center and later became one of the country’s strongest border castles. The castle is best known for the Siege of Eger in 1552, when a small force of about 2,000 defenders led by István Dobó successfully resisted a much larger Ottoman army.

This dramatic victory became a symbol of Hungarian courage and national pride. Although the Ottomans eventually captured the castle in 1596, it remained an important stronghold for many years. Parts of the fortress were later damaged or demolished, but archaeological work and restoration have preserved much of its historic character.

Today, the Castle of Eger is a major tourist attraction featuring museums, underground passages, historic ruins, and panoramic views of the city. It remains one of Hungary’s most significant landmarks and a powerful reminder of the country’s medieval and early modern history.
