Verified Castle of Éleskő

Szilvásvárad, Hungary, Hungary

The Castle of Éleskő is a small medieval hilltop castle ruin located near Szilvásvárad in the Bükk Mountains of northern Hungary.

Built in the 13th century, it is considered one of the few stone castles in Hungary that likely dates back to the period shortly after the Mongol invasion, giving it special historical importance. The fortress stood on a steep rocky ridge overlooking the surrounding valleys and consisted of a tower, a walled courtyard, and defensive earthworks.

Historical records suggest it served mainly as an administrative center rather than a major military stronghold. It was first mentioned in written sources in the 14th century and had already fallen into ruin by the mid-1300s. Today, only scattered remains of the castle survive, hidden in the forested hills above the famous Szalajka Valley.
