Verified Castle of Esztergom

Esztergom, Hungary, Hungary

The Castle of Esztergom is one of Hungary’s most important historic landmarks, standing on Castle Hill above the Danube River in the city of Esztergom.

Built on the site of an earlier Roman fort, it became a major royal and religious center in the 10th century when Grand Prince Géza and later Saint Stephen, Hungary’s first king, established their residence there. For more than two centuries, the castle served as one of the principal residences of Hungarian kings and played a key role in the formation of the Hungarian state and Christian church.

After the Mongol invasion, the royal seat was moved to Buda, but the castle remained an important ecclesiastical center under the archbishops of Esztergom. Over the centuries, the fortress was repeatedly expanded, damaged, and rebuilt during conflicts involving the Ottomans and Habsburgs. Despite these changes, significant parts of the medieval complex have survived and been restored.

Today, the Castle of Esztergom is a museum and cultural attraction located beside the famous Esztergom Basilica. Visitors can explore its historic halls, archaeological remains, and panoramic views while learning about Hungary’s royal and religious heritage.
