Castle of Kereki
Kereki, Hungary, Hungary
The Castle of Kereki, also known as Fehérkő Castle, is a medieval hilltop fortress located near the village of Kereki in Somogy County, close to Lake Balaton.
Built in the early 14th century, it served as an administrative and estate center rather than a major military stronghold. Throughout its history, the castle was controlled by several noble families and was involved in regional conflicts, including struggles during the reign of King Sigismund of Luxembourg. It was rebuilt after damage in the early 15th century and later restored again by new owners in the 16th century.
Around 1543, as the Ottoman advance threatened the region, the castle was deliberately destroyed to prevent it from being used by invading forces. Over time, many of its stones were reused in nearby construction projects, leaving only partial ruins. Today, the restored remains of Fehérkő Castle are among the best-preserved medieval castle ruins in Somogy County.
