The Castle of Nógrád is a historic hilltop fortress in the village of Nógrád in northern Hungary.

Originally established in the 11th century as a wooden stronghold, it later developed into an important stone castle that controlled the surrounding region and served as a key defensive and administrative center. The castle reached its greatest significance in the late 15th century, when Bishop Miklós Báthory rebuilt and expanded it with impressive stone fortifications, a large keep, and Renaissance-style residential buildings.

Its strategic position made it an important stronghold during conflicts involving the Ottoman Empire and other regional powers. In 1685, a lightning strike ignited stored gunpowder, causing a devastating explosion that severely damaged the castle. It was subsequently abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. Restoration and conservation efforts have taken place in modern times to preserve its remains.

Today, the castle is a popular historical attraction, known for its medieval ruins, striking hilltop setting, and panoramic views of the Börzsöny region. It offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into Hungary’s medieval past and remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in Nógrád County.
