The Castle of Ónod is a historic medieval fortress located in the village of Ónod in northeastern Hungary, near the Sajó River.

Originally established around 1350 by the Czudar family, it grew from a fortified church into an important stronghold that protected key river crossings and trade routes. As the Ottoman threat increased during the 16th century, the castle was strengthened with Italian-style corner bastions and became a major border fortress.

It successfully withstood Turkish sieges and played a crucial role in defending the Sajó Valley after the fall of Eger in 1596. The castle is also linked to Hungarian independence history. In 1707, during the War of Independence led by Francis II Rákóczi, the famous Diet of Ónod was held nearby, where the Hungarian rebels declared the dethronement of the Habsburg dynasty.

Although much of the fortress was damaged during later conflicts, restoration work in the 20th century preserved significant sections of its walls and towers. Today, the Castle of Ónod stands as an important historical monument and a reminder of Hungary’s medieval and early modern past.
