Castle of Regec
Regéc, Hungary, Hungary
The Castle of Regec is a medieval hilltop fortress located in the Zemplén Mountains of northeastern Hungary.
Built around the beginning of the 14th century by the powerful Aba family, it occupied a strategic position on a high mountain peak and played an important role in the region's defense and administration. The castle is closely associated with the Rákóczi family, one of Hungary’s most famous noble dynasties. Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II, a key figure in Hungary’s struggle for independence, spent part of his childhood at Regec Castle.
After being occupied by Habsburg forces, the fortress was demolished in the late 17th century and remained in ruins for centuries. Extensive archaeological work and restoration efforts began in the late 20th century, leading to the reconstruction of important sections of the castle. Today, the partially restored castle is a popular historical and tourist attraction, featuring exhibitions, reconstructed rooms, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests.
