Pusztapalota Castle Ruins, also known as Bátorkő, are the remains of a small medieval fortress located about 5 km north of Várpalota in Hungary, hidden among the wooded hills of the Eastern Bakony region. The castle was likely built in the late 13th or early 14th century and served as a defensive stronghold for local noble families before later coming under royal ownership. The fortress stood on a narrow rocky outcrop overlooking a valley, making it naturally well protected. Historical records indicate that it was inhabited and maintained throughout the Middle Ages, but it gradually fell into decline during the Ottoman period in Hungary and was eventually abandoned. After its abandonment, the site became known as “Pusztapalota,” meaning “abandoned palace.” Today, visitors can see sections of the castle walls and the remains of a tower rising above the surrounding forest. Although only fragments survive, the ruins provide a glimpse into medieval Hungarian military architecture and offer scenic views of the surrounding landscape, making the site a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts.
