Csesznek Castle is a striking medieval fortress perched on a rocky hill above the village of Csesznek in Hungary’s Bakony Mountains.

It was built around 1263 in the aftermath of the Mongol invasion and became an important defensive stronghold due to its strategic location overlooking key routes through the region. Over the centuries, the castle belonged to several powerful Hungarian noble families, including the Garai, Szapolyai, and Esterházy families.

It played a significant military role during the Ottoman wars, successfully resisting attacks at times, although it was briefly occupied by Ottoman forces before being recaptured by the Hungarians. As its military importance declined, the castle gradually fell into ruin. Natural disasters, including an earthquake and a lightning-caused fire in the early 19th century, contributed to its deterioration, leaving the dramatic ruins seen today.

Today, Csesznek Castle is one of Hungary’s most impressive castle ruins, attracting visitors with its medieval atmosphere, preserved stone walls and towers, and panoramic views across the forests and hills of the Bakony region.
