Csikling Várrom

Csikling Várrom is a small medieval castle ruin hidden in the forests between Isztimér and Bakonycsernye in the eastern Bakony region of Hungary.

Located on a hilltop surrounded by steep slopes, the site consists mainly of earthworks, traces of stone walls, a moat, and the foundations of a former tower. Very little is known about the castle’s history because it is not mentioned in surviving medieval documents. Historians believe it may have been built during the 13th century, possibly by members of the powerful Csák family, and may have served as a small fortified residence, hunting lodge, or local stronghold.

The castle was abandoned at an unknown date, and over the centuries most of its structures collapsed. Archaeological surveys have identified the remains of defensive ditches, walls, and a tower, but no major excavation has been carried out. Today, Csikling Várrom is a quiet historical site popular with hikers exploring the Bakony hills. Although only limited ruins remain, the location offers a glimpse into Hungary’s medieval past and the scenic natural landscape surrounding it.
