Csobánc Castle is a medieval fortress ruin perched on top of Csobánc Hill near the village of Gyulakeszi in western Hungary.

Built in the 13th century on a volcanic hill overlooking the Tapolca Basin, it occupied a naturally strong defensive position with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and Lake Balaton. The castle played an important role in Hungary’s defense against Ottoman expansion. Strengthened in the late 15th century, it successfully resisted several Ottoman attacks during the 16th century and served as a key military outpost in the region.

During the Rákóczi War of Independence in the early 18th century, the fortress again became strategically important. After imperial forces regained control, the castle was deliberately damaged and eventually fell into ruin. Today, the remains of Csobánc Castle are a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Visitors come to explore the ruins and enjoy the outstanding panoramic views across the Balaton Uplands, making it one of the most scenic castle sites in Hungary.
