Csővári Vár
Csővár, Hungary, Hungary
Csővári Vár is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle located near the village of Csővár, about 20 kilometers east of Vác in northern Hungary.
Built in the 13th century, likely during the reign of King Béla IV, it occupied a strategic position on a rocky hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. The castle experienced a turbulent history. It was destroyed during feudal conflicts in the early 14th century, later rebuilt, and at various times served as a noble residence, a military stronghold, and even a base for Hussite forces.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, it was expanded and transformed into a more comfortable Renaissance-style castle while retaining its defensive role. As Ottoman forces advanced into central Hungary, the castle was eventually captured and occupied. After it lost its military importance, it was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin.
Today, the remaining walls and towers are a popular destination for hikers. Visitors are rewarded with impressive views of the Cserhát Hills and the surrounding landscape, making the site a blend of history, nature, and scenic exploration.
