Damásd Vára
Ipolydamásd, Hungary, Hungary
Damásd Vára is the ruin of a medieval castle located near the village of Ipolydamásd in northern Hungary, overlooking the Ipoly Valley.
Although its exact construction date is unknown, archaeological finds suggest that the site was already in use by the 12th century, and the castle was first mentioned in written records in 1361. Because its position made it difficult to defend, the castle was used mainly for strategic observation, controlling routes along the Ipoly River, and as a royal hunting residence.
It changed owners several times and was associated with Hungarian kings during the Middle Ages. The fortress was captured by the Ottomans in 1544, later recaptured by Hungarian forces, and repeatedly changed hands during the Ottoman wars. After another attack in the 1640s, the castle was burned and largely destroyed, ending its military role.
It was never rebuilt, and its stones were gradually removed over the following centuries. Today, only modest ruins remain, but the site is valued for its historical importance and scenic setting. Information boards and picnic facilities help visitors explore this lesser-known piece of Hungary’s medieval heritage.
