Diósgyőr Castle is one of Hungary’s most important medieval fortresses, located in the Diósgyőr district of Miskolc at the foot of the Bükk Mountains.

The first castle on the site was built in the 12th century, but it was destroyed during the Mongol invasion of 1241–1242 and later rebuilt in stone. The castle reached its golden age in the 14th century under King Louis the Great, who transformed it into a magnificent Gothic royal residence. Its strategic location on the route to Poland made it an important political and cultural center, and it was the site of significant events such as the 1381 Treaty of Turin. 

For centuries, Diósgyőr served as a residence and wedding gift for Hungarian queens, earning the nickname “Castle of the Queens.” After the Ottoman period, it gradually lost its military importance and fell into ruin. Today, the castle is a restored historical landmark featuring reconstructed halls, exhibitions, and medieval-themed attractions.
