Esterházy Castle in Fertőd, also known as Eszterháza, is one of Hungary’s most magnificent palaces and is often called the “Hungarian Versailles” because of its grand Baroque and Rococo architecture, lavish interiors, and extensive gardens.

The palace reached its golden age in the 18th century under Prince Nikolaus (Miklós) Esterházy, who transformed an earlier hunting lodge into an impressive royal-style residence. It became a major center of art, music, and aristocratic life in Hungary. The famous composer Joseph Haydn lived and worked at the palace for many years, directing musical performances and composing some of his most celebrated works there.

Today, Esterházy Castle is one of Hungary’s top cultural attractions, welcoming visitors with restored state rooms, exhibitions, historic gardens, concerts, and guided tours that showcase the grandeur of the Esterházy family and the palace’s rich history.
