Festetics Palace in Keszthely is one of Hungary’s grandest Baroque palaces and a major landmark near Lake Balaton.
Construction began in 1745 under Count Kristóf Festetics, and the palace was expanded over more than a century, eventually becoming one of the country’s largest aristocratic residences. The palace served as the home of the influential Festetics family, who played an important role in education, culture, and agriculture in Hungary.
Count György Festetics founded the Georgikon in 1797, considered Europe’s first agricultural college. Known for its elegant Baroque and Neo-Baroque architecture, the palace features richly decorated rooms, grand staircases, beautiful gardens, and the famous Helikon Library, which houses a remarkable collection of historic books.
Today, Festetics Palace operates as the Helikon Palace Museum and is one of Hungary’s most popular cultural attractions, offering visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle, art, and heritage of the country’s noble families.
