Füzér Castle is one of Hungary’s oldest and most famous medieval fortresses, dramatically perched on a steep volcanic hill in the Zemplén Mountains near the Slovak border.

First mentioned in records in 1264 and likely built earlier in the 13th century, the castle occupies a striking position 552 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The castle played an important role in Hungarian history, most notably after the Battle of Mohács in 1526, when the Holy Crown of Hungary was kept there for safekeeping during the Ottoman threat.

Over the centuries, it belonged to several noble families, including the influential Perényi family, who expanded and improved the fortress. After losing its military importance, the castle was abandoned and fell into ruin, but extensive restoration work in recent years has revived many of its historic structures.

A major reconstruction completed in 2016 restored key sections such as the chapel, palace wing, and defensive walls. Today, Füzér Castle is a popular cultural and tourist attraction where visitors can explore medieval exhibits, learn about Hungary’s history, and enjoy some of the most spectacular views from any castle in the country.
