Grad Bogenšperk
Bogenšperk, Šmartno pri Litiji, Slovenia, Slovenia
Grad Bogenšperk, located in Bogenšperk near Šmartno pri Litiji in central Slovenia, is a well-preserved 16th-century Renaissance castle built by the noble Wagen family after the devastating 1511 earthquake damaged their nearby Lihtenberk Castle. It gained fame as the home of polymath Johann Weikhard von Valvasor from 1672, who established Slovenia's first museum collections, library, and printing press there while authoring the monumental The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola in 1689, earning him fellowship in London's Royal Society. Featuring four towers around an arcaded courtyard on a 412-meter hill, it passed through various owners including the Windisch-Graetz family until World War II, and now serves as a cultural monument and museum open to visitors.
