Grad Khislstein
Kranj, Slovenia, Slovenia
Grad Khislstein (also Kieselstein Castle) stands in the heart of Kranj, Slovenia, overlooking a Sava River crossing on a site fortified since antiquity, with walls predating 1500 years ago.
Built in 1256 by the Counts of Ortenburg as a fortress, it passed to the Counts of Celje, then Habsburgs, before merchant Janez Khisl from Fužine bought and rebuilt it in 1578 into a Renaissance manor named after him, featuring ornate portals and vaulted halls amid Turkish threat defenses.
Owned later by Mosconni, Barbo, Auersperg, and Pagliaruzzi families until 1913, it now houses the Gorenjska Museum's exhibits on regional history, trade, industry, and notable figures.
