Verified Gyula castle

Gyula, Hungary, Hungary

Gyula Castle is one of Hungary’s most important medieval fortresses, located in the town of Gyula near the Romanian border.

Built mainly in the 15th century, it is famous for being the only fully preserved Gothic brick castle on the flat plains of Central and Eastern Europe. The castle played a major role in defending Hungary against the Ottoman Empire. In 1566, its garrison resisted a large Ottoman army for more than two months before the fortress was finally captured after a long and difficult siege.

Over the centuries, the castle served military, administrative, and residential purposes. Unlike many Hungarian castles that fell into ruin, Gyula Castle survived largely intact and has been carefully restored. Today, the castle operates as a museum with exhibitions that showcase medieval life, warfare, and local history.
