Horthy Castle
Kenderes, Hungary, Hungary
Horthy Castle in Kenderes is a historic manor house best known as the family residence and birthplace of Miklós Horthy, who served as Regent of Hungary from 1920 to 1944.
The estate originally began as a Baroque mansion in the early 19th century and came into the ownership of the Horthy family in 1850. In 1925, the building was extensively remodeled in a Neo-Baroque style, becoming a larger and more elegant residence that hosted politicians, military leaders, and foreign guests.
The castle suffered significant damage and looting during World War II. In the decades that followed, it served various purposes, including as a granary, stables, and an agricultural school, although parts of the original structure and interior survived. Today, Horthy Castle is one of Kenderes’s main attractions.
