Kalc Castle
Bač, Ilirska Bistrica, Slovenia, Slovenia
Kalc Castle (also Kalec or Steinberg Castle) near Bač in Ilirska Bistrica, southwestern Slovenia, was built in the mid-17th century by the noble Steinberg family on a 618-meter slope overlooking the Pivka River source. Ownership later shifted to the Auersperg family and Slovenian composer Miroslav Vilhar, who died there, before abandonment post-World War I led to its gradual ruin, though it hosted a 1941 TIGR antifascist meeting amid surrounding linden trees. Today, only a tower and wall remnants endure along the Krpan Hiking Trail and Castle Bike Trail, blending history with scenic valley access.
