Kecskemét
Central Hungary, Hungary
Kecskemét is a city of county status in central Hungary, serving as the administrative seat and largest urban center of Bács‑Kiskun County in the Southern Great Plain region. Located about 85 kilometers southeast of Budapest and roughly halfway between Budapest and Szeged, it sits on a sandy ridge between the Danube and Tisza rivers known as “the orchard of Hungary” because of its extensive fruit and vine cultivation. The town is celebrated for its fine Art Nouveau architecture, especially around its polygonal main square, where many colorful, ornately decorated buildings give the downtown a distinctive, almost fairy‑tale appearance. Kecskemét is also famous for its apricot brandy (barackpálinka) and rich cultural life, including music festivals, a major film‑animation scene, and institutions linked to composers such as Zoltán Kodály, making it both a productive agricultural hub and a lively cultural city on the Great Plain.
