Kemend vára
Kemendollár, Hungary
Kemend vára, located in Kemendollár, Hungary, is a medieval castle first mentioned in historical records in 1370 under the name Castrum Kemend.
It was originally granted by King Charles Robert to the Németújvári family in exchange for Léka Castle, and they retained ownership into the reign of King Louis the Great. In the early 1400s, the castle passed as a royal grant to members of the Gersei Pető family, who defended it against attacks and held it through turbulent times, including sieges and disputes over ownership extending into the mid-15th century.
The castle's history reflects the complex feudal struggles of medieval Hungary, with multiple transfers of control involving the royal family and noble houses. By 1692, the castle was already described as abandoned. Its ruins remain a testament to its past strategic importance in the region.
