Kinizsi Castle
Nagyvázsony, Hungary, Hungary
Kinizsi Castle in Nagyvázsony is one of Hungary’s best-preserved late medieval castles, located in the Balaton Highlands about 20 kilometers from Veszprém.
The fortress was built in the 15th century and became famous after King Matthias Corvinus granted it to his legendary military commander, Pál Kinizsi, in recognition of his service. Kinizsi expanded and strengthened the castle, turning it into both a secure stronghold and a noble residence. The castle later played a role in Hungary’s defenses against Ottoman incursions and remained an important regional center for centuries.
The complex is known for its impressive residential tower, fortified walls, chapel, courtyard, and traces of early Renaissance architecture. It has survived in remarkably good condition compared to many other Hungarian castles thanks to extensive restoration work carried out during the 20th century.
Today, Kinizsi Castle serves as a museum and heritage site where visitors can explore medieval exhibits, historic rooms, and displays dedicated to Pál Kinizsi and Hungary’s border defenders, while enjoying a glimpse into the country’s medieval past.
