Kunšperk
Slovenia, Slovenia
Kunšperk Castle, known as Königsberg in German, is a 12th-century Romanesque fortress whose ruins overlook the market town of Kunšperk in eastern Slovenia's Municipality of Bistrica ob Sotli. First possibly owned by Oton Ehrnegg and destroyed by Krško Bishop Henrik in 1173 before rebuilding between 1167-1174, it was held by the Lords of Kunšperk—ministeriales of the Krško Bishops—until 1395 when knight Andrej handed it to Herman I of Celje amid family disputes. Later managed by provincial caretakers and tenants until abandonment in the 17th century, its mighty remnants include defensive walls, a Gothic chapel, and Renaissance fortifications, tied to legends like knight Kuno's attack on Cesargrad.
