Lož Castle
Lož, Slovenia, Slovenia
Lož Castle is a ruined 12th-century medieval fortress perched on a 698-meter hill above the small historic town of Lož in southwestern Slovenia's Lož Valley. Built by the Patriarchate of Aquileia and first held by the Counts of Vovbrk before passing to their relatives the Counts Sternberg, it later came under Counts of Celje control after 1418 until their 1456 extinction, withstanding Habsburg attacks during regional conflicts. Abandoned after its 17th-century owners relocated to Snežnik Castle, the desolate structure—earning its local nickname "Pusti grad"—overlooks a once-thriving market town granted city rights in 1477 following Turkish raids, now standing as atmospheric ruins amid scenic trails.
