Over centuries, it evolved from a military stronghold into a noble residence with Renaissance bastions by Domenico dell'Allio (1556-1562), a Baroque stairway (1747-1759), Loretto Chapel (1665-1675), and lavish Knights' Hall featuring Johann Gebler's 1763 ceiling painting of a Christian-Turkish battle. Today, it houses the Maribor Regional Museum with collections spanning archaeology, ethnology, art, and local history, offering public access to its arcaded courtyard and cultural exhibits.
