Metlika Castle
Metlika, Slovenia, Slovenia
Metlika Castle is a 15th-century fortress in the historic town of Metlika, southeastern Slovenia near the Croatian border, first documented in 1456 and pivotal in defending against Ottoman raids during the 15th and 16th centuries. Originally owned by the Counts of Alap and later the Croatian Frankopan family and Zagreb Cathedral Chapter, it suffered fires in 1705 and 1790 before restoration transformed it into a comfortable residence with a pentagonal layout, three-story entrance tower, arcaded courtyard, and two defensive towers. Since 1951, the nationalized castle has housed the Bela Krajina Museum with cultural history exhibits, Roman artifacts, ethnological collections, a firefighting museum in the stables, wedding hall, wine cellar, and Gangl Gallery, hosting summer events after 1999-2000 renovations.
