Miren Castle
Miren, Slovenia, Slovenia
Miren Castle, perched on a hill above Miren village near Nova Gorica in southwestern Slovenia, is a medieval elevation site never actually hosting a true castle but dominated by successive churches and monastic structures since at least 1392. The current Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1886, was destroyed in both World Wars and rebuilt, featuring 1958 frescoes by Tone Kralj, while earlier churches from 1488 stood nearby amid hermit habitation from 1700-1756. Accessible via architect Ivan Vurnik's 1931 Stations of the Cross and unique Scala Sancta Chapel blessed in 1757, it remains a pilgrimage destination with panoramic Karst and Vipava Valley views.
