Olimje Monastery
Olimje, Slovenia, Slovenia
Olimje Monastery in Olimje, Slovenia, originated as an 11th-century fortress built by the Counts of Peilestein, later rebuilt around 1550 in Renaissance style by Count Tattenbach with defensive features against Turkish raids. Converted into a Pauline monastery in 1663 by Baron Ivan Zakmardy, it gained a Baroque church (1665-1675) featuring Slovenia's largest gilded altar of the Assumption of Mary, 1740 presbytery frescoes by Ivan Ranger, and a side chapel to St. Francis Xavier. Dissolved by Emperor Joseph II in 1782 and partially demolished by later owners, the site—renowned for one of Europe's earliest monastic pharmacies with 1780 Paracelsus frescoes—passed to Franciscans in 1949 and now thrives with herb gardens, cultural events, and its preserved layered architecture.
