Podsmreka Castle
Slovenia, Slovenia
Podsmreka Castle is a 16th-century Renaissance manor house in Podsmreka pri Višnji Gori, Ivančna Gorica municipality, southeastern Slovenia, originally built by the noble Galli family as an E-shaped complex with luxurious western living quarters and utilitarian eastern stables around two courtyards.
Rebuilt multiple times, it passed through owners including 19th-century merchant Fortuna and Viennese noble Peter Klarwill, who curated an art collection there until selling it in 1939 amid rising tensions, later serving as a women's prison, pottery museum storage, and apartments before falling into ruin near a gravel pit.
Acquired by the municipality in 2014 and listed as a cultural monument, it ties to local bee breeding history from the Rithschutz baron's 1866 enterprise—earning Paris Exposition awards—and now features innovative heritage presentations via EU projects.
