Rékavár
Mecseknádasd, Hungary, Hungary
Rékavár is a ruined medieval castle hidden in the forests near Mecseknádasd in the Eastern Mecsek Hills of southern Hungary.
The ruins stand on a hilltop above the scenic Óbánya Valley and are reached by hiking trails through the surrounding woodland. The castle’s origins are uncertain, but historical and archaeological evidence suggests it existed from at least the 13th century and may have been built even earlier.
Local tradition links the site to the exiled English royal family and claims it may have been the birthplace of Saint Margaret of Scotland, although this has not been definitively proven. Rékavár was an important fortified residence during the Middle Ages, but it was eventually destroyed by fire, possibly during the turbulent period following the Battle of Mohács in the 16th century.
Over time, many of its stones were reused in nearby settlements, leaving only fragments of walls and earthworks visible today. Today, the site is valued for its historical significance, legends, and peaceful natural setting, making it a popular destination for hikers and visitors exploring the Mecsek region.
