Sánc-Hegy
Hungary, Hungary
Sánc-hegy is a historic hill in Nyergesújfalu, northwestern Hungary, overlooking the Danube.
Its strategic location made it an important site for centuries, and archaeological evidence shows that people lived here as early as the Bronze Age. During Roman times, a military fort known as Crumerum was built on the hill as part of the frontier defense system along the Danube, which marked the edge of the Roman Empire.
Excavations have uncovered remains of the fort, nearby settlements, graves, and other artifacts that reveal the area's long history. The hill was also used during the Rákóczi War of Independence in the early 18th century, when earthwork defenses were constructed on the summit. Today, visitors can see traces of these fortifications, historical memorials, and impressive views of the Danube and surrounding landscape.
