Sátoraljaújhely Castle
Sátoraljaújhely, Hungary, Hungary
Sátoraljaújhely Castle is a medieval fortress ruin located on Castle Hill above the town of Sátoraljaújhely in northeastern Hungary.
Built between 1242 and 1261 after the Mongol invasion, it served as an important defensive stronghold overlooking the surrounding Zemplén region. Over the centuries, the castle played a role in regional power struggles and changed hands among kings and noble families. Its military importance declined, and it was eventually destroyed around 1537, leaving only ruins on the hilltop.
Today, the site is an active archaeological and heritage attraction where excavations have uncovered many valuable artifacts. Visitors can explore the preserved ruins, learn about the castle’s history through a nearby visitor center, and enjoy panoramic views of Sátoraljaújhely and the surrounding Zemplén landscape.
